Chapter 18: The Riftheart

The higher Kael and Lira climbed, the more the world seemed to bend around them. The spiral staircase twisted through impossible geometries—at times upside down, sideways, or phasing through walls that flickered between crystal and bleeding stone. Time itself felt unstable. One moment Kael heard echoes of his mother’s lullabies… the next, screams from a battle not yet fought.

Lira winced, gripping her side. “This place… it’s alive.”

Kael nodded. “And it remembers everything.”

Above them, the Riftheart pulsed like a heartbeat made of stars.

A Chamber Outside Time

When they reached the top, they found a wide, circular chamber. The walls were mirrors—but not mere reflections. Each panel showed a different version of Kael.

One wore full armor, crowned and corrupted.

One was dead on the floor, pierced by a golden sword.

One was not Kael at all—but a girl, with his eyes, staring defiantly at a crumbling world.

Kael turned in place. “These are… paths I could’ve taken?”

Lira’s voice was hoarse. “No. These are all the Kaels the Rift knows. Every choice. Every mistake. Every version of you.”

In the center of the room stood a floating sphere of pure energy. The Riftheart.

The Guardian Within

As Kael stepped forward, the Riftheart shimmered and twisted, forming into a figure—tall, faceless, and glowing with blinding light. It wielded no weapon, yet Kael felt crushed by its presence.

“You seek truth,” the entity said. “But you are built on lies.”

Kael stood tall. “Then tell me what I am.”

“You are a fracture.”

Images burst into his mind. A world torn in half. A rebellion drowned in blood. A mother burning on a pyre, smiling even as the flames consumed her.

Kael staggered. “Stop!”

But the entity pressed on.

“You were never meant to exist. You are the consequence of a bargain. A stolen soul caught between threads.”

Lira stepped forward, lightning flickering from her fingers. “He’s more than that. He’s earned his place.”

“Have you?” the Riftheart asked.

Suddenly, the room rippled—and Kael found himself alone.

The Trial of the Rift

He stood in a wasteland. The sky was black. The earth was shattered glass. Before him stood a version of himself in armor laced with gold, the Crown of Wills glowing red-hot.

Dark Kael.

“You could’ve been me,” the doppelganger said, drawing a blade made of screaming souls. “You still could be.”

Kael raised his own weapon.

“No,” he said. “I choose who I am.”

The two collided.

Clash after clash echoed across the void. Each strike of the soulblade drew out memories—Kael’s fear, his rage, his longing for vengeance. But Kael didn’t give in. Not this time.

He plunged his blade through his darker self’s chest.

“I’m not your shadow,” he whispered. “I’m the fire you couldn't control.”

The world shattered.

Waking Up Changed

Kael returned to the Riftheart chamber. Lira rushed to him, relief in her eyes.

The guardian was gone.

Only the Riftheart remained, quiet and waiting.

Kael reached out—and it accepted him.

Energy flooded through his body. Visions and knowledge, ancient and forbidden, poured into him. He saw how the Spires were built—not by humans, but by beings who had fled a dying realm. He saw how the Crown of Wills was forged—not to rule, but to contain a god.

And he saw something else:

A name. One that had been whispered in the void.

Varok.

The true enemy.

Leaving the Spire

Kael and Lira descended in silence, the staircase now stable and smooth. When they exited, the twilight sky had changed.

Stars burned brighter.

The wind whispered in a new language.

Lira turned to him. “You’re not the same.”

Kael looked at his hands. Riftlight danced across his skin.

“I’m not,” he said. “I remember now. Who I was… who I have to become.”

“And Varok?”

“He’s not coming.”

Kael narrowed his eyes at the horizon.

“He’s already here.”
