Chapter 4: The Reckoning

Kieran staggered back, his mind struggling to process the words that had just left the woman’s lips. His heart raced, pounding in his chest like a drum. His mother? Impossible. She had been dead for years—killed in the same mysterious explosion that had destroyed his childhood home. He had never known what truly happened that night, only that the world had seemed to shift on its axis, leaving him with nothing but questions and a deep, gnawing void where answers should have been.
But here she was, standing before him, alive and unchanged by time, telling him she was his mother. His mind spun in circles, disbelief fighting to break through.
"No," Kieran whispered, shaking his head in confusion. "That’s not possible. You—"
"I know it’s hard to believe," she interrupted gently, her voice steady. "But it’s the truth. I’ve been watching over you since the day you were born. The Rift... it’s not just a source of power, Kieran. It’s something far older, something tied to our bloodline."
Kieran took a step back, struggling to breathe. His staff trembled in his hand, the weight of her revelation sinking into him like a cold stone. "But how? How can you be alive? I saw... I saw you die in that explosion."
Her eyes softened, and there was a deep sadness in her gaze. "That explosion was no accident, Kieran. It was orchestrated by those who fear the Rift’s power. But I survived. I didn’t want you to know the truth back then, not until you were ready. But now, you have no choice. You must understand who you are."
"I don’t understand anything!" Kieran shouted, his voice rising with a mix of anger and confusion. "How could you leave me? Why didn’t you come back? Why didn’t you tell me the truth?"
The woman stepped forward, placing a hand on his shoulder. The touch was warm, grounding him as his emotions raged inside him. "I had to disappear, Kieran. For your safety. The Rift is a dangerous force. And you—" She paused, her voice faltering as though the weight of her words was almost too much to bear. "You have a power inside you, a power that’s tied directly to the Rift. That’s why they came after us. That’s why I had to protect you from the truth for so long."
Kieran’s mind swirled. Power? The Rift? What did she mean? He had always thought his abilities were just a product of his training, the result of years of study and mastering forgotten magic. But now… now, the pieces didn’t fit together anymore.
"Why didn’t you tell me sooner?" he asked, his voice quiet. "Why wait until now?"
"Because I couldn’t trust anyone," she replied. "The world is changing, Kieran. The Rift is awakening, and with it, the forces who seek to control it. But there’s something worse—a darkness—growing inside it. I was hoping it would stay dormant, but I see now that I was wrong. You were always meant to play a role in this. You’re the key."
Kieran swallowed hard, trying to come to terms with the truth she was laying before him. His mind was still reeling, but one thing was clear. The Rift was far more than a magical anomaly—it was a nexus, a conduit for powers that could reshape the world, and Kieran was tied to it in ways he couldn’t fully understand.
"But what do I do now?" Kieran asked, his voice raw. "What do I do with this power? I don’t even know how to control it. I don’t know what’s happening to me."
"You’re stronger than you realize," she said softly, her eyes filled with pride. "The magic you wield is only the beginning. But to control it, you must first understand it—and to understand it, you must face your past."
Kieran looked at her, confusion still evident on his face. "Face my past? What do you mean?"
"You have to go back," she said, her voice growing serious. "Back to where it all began. To the ruins of our old home."
The words hit him like a blow. The place where it had all started—the explosion that killed his mother, the night that shattered his life. Kieran had sworn he would never return to that cursed place, never to face the memories that haunted him. But now, it seemed, the past was calling him back.
"I can’t," Kieran said, shaking his head. "I can’t go back there. It’s too much."
"You must," she insisted, her voice firm. "The answers you seek lie there. The key to controlling your power, to understanding the Rift, is hidden in those ruins. The magic you’ve been drawing on isn’t just from the Rift—it’s from your bloodline. Your family has a long history with the Rift, and the answers you need are there. If you truly want to stop what’s coming, you must face what happened that night."
Kieran clenched his fists. His mind was a whirlwind of emotions—fear, anger, confusion. But beneath it all, there was a gnawing feeling, a sense of inevitability. The world was shifting around him, and no matter how much he resisted, he was being pulled deeper into this conflict. Into the war for control of the Rift.
And so, with a heavy heart, Kieran nodded. "I’ll go. But you’re coming with me. I need you. I can’t do this alone."
She smiled faintly. "I’ll be with you every step of the way. But remember, Kieran—you’re not just going to face the past. You’re going to face the future, and what’s coming from the Rift is far worse than anything you can imagine."
With that, the woman turned and began to walk toward the ruins of the city, her steps steady, as though she knew exactly where she was going. Kieran followed, the weight of their journey heavy on his shoulders. The answers he sought lay ahead, but so did the darkness.
And deep within him, the power of the Rift stirred, waiting to be unleashed.
